OC TOLBERT I’m Shooting High (UK Kent CD and vinyl 45
from Dave Hamilton’s master tapes)

I just love the coolness and optimism of this one. It actually has a slight Chicago feel with its mid-pace, finger-clicking rhythm; those girly vocals just soar.

JIMMY "SOUL" CLARKE Sweet Darlin (Come On And Be My) (Soulhawk)
I’m a sucker for the slow build up opening vocal and this is just about the best, building up dance floor tension that just has to be released when the beat kicks in. On a practical note, it gives the punters a chance to put their drinks down and be on the floor in time for the soul explosion.

BETTY BOO Say It Isn’t So (unissued Popcon Wylie tape or acetate, issued on UK Grapevine)
The perfect Wylie/Hester Detroit beat with chopping guitars RIGHT on the fours. Betty’s voice is sweet and charming but still conveys the emotional misery of the lyrics.

SHARON SCOTT I’m Not Afraid (unissued RCA/Pied Piper master tape and acetate)
Kent CD From the fabulous trawl of Pied Piper masters from the RCA vaults, I could have chosen brilliant tracks by Lorraine Chandler, Nancy Wilcox or the Metros but this is the one I never tire of hearing. It’s understated arrangement just builds and builds on a ferocious rhythm and Sharon sings wistfully and enigmatically: somebody please find this girl.

LITTLE ANN Who Are You Trying To Fool (UK Kent CD and vinyl 45 from Dave Hamilton’s master tapes)
Self written with Dave and Daryll Goolsby, this master tape discovery of the 90s has the moodiest backing track going. Ann’s plaintive voice reflected her bittersweet life and is a fine testament to an outstanding talent, whose qualities took decades to emerge. PS one dropped out but you could stick it somewhere even if it’s just for Bob Foster!

JERRY-O Karate Boo-ga-loo (Boo-ga-loo)
Pure rhythm. I’m not sure if it’s soul, latin or funk but if you can’t move to this one, see a doctor. Jerry-O’s talking pure gibberish’ just to get you onto that floor.
