Darel Banks I’m The One Who Loves You (Volt)
Any Detroit Top 5 of mine would have to include at least one Darrell Banks
side, such was the man’s influence on the Detroit music scene throughout his tragically short career. This for me is his finest hour, executing Melvin Davis’
lyrics in such a pleading fashion, as the Don Davis string charts cut across his vocals in dramatic style – a perfect recording in every way!
Milton Wright Like A Rolling Stone (Satiron)
Only released on the Satiron label flip of ‘I Belong To You’ this vocal showcases the Tera Shirma production company at their very best, smooth as silk vocals from Milton on an uplifting song, shame it wasn’t released at the time, cream always rises to the top in the end however… this definitely has the P.H. factor.
Sony Allen Your Love Was So Wonderful (Hit Pack)
A brilliant Mike Terry production, superb powerful vocals from the unknown Sonny Allen, beautiful femme support , sweetened by flowing strings and burping sax, all the ingredients for a potent Motor City waxing. The instrumental flip is great as well…
Joan Dovalle Let Me Go (Sport)
A monumental Herbie Williams and Joe Hunter production, as they give the Detroit treatment to Big Maybelle’s Port outing , with the little known Joan Dovalle giving her all on a great song. This track bears the same backing as Abstract Reality’s ‘Love Burns Like A Fire Inside’ on the same label.
Doni Burdick Bari Track (Sound Impression)
For me, the finest instrumental of them all, as Andrew ‘Mike’ Terry’s baritone sax weaves its magic through the backing to Rose Battiste’s Revilot outing ‘I Miss My Baby’.
